Lawyer Reed Brody spoke at a public hearing at the European Parliament titled ‘The Case of Hissène Habrè’, organised by MEP Ana Gomes. Brody is known worldwide as the ‘Dictator Hunter’ after he played a central role in convicting Chad’s dictator Habrè. During the meeting he illustrated how this experience can be seen as a ‘seed of hope’ in African history.

Dutch government to stop long arm Eritrean regime following report

This week, a Dutch report with the title that translates to ‘nothing is what it seems’ came out. The report presents detailed research into the Eritrean community and organisations in the Netherlands and the influence of the long arm of the Eritrean regime on it. Additionally, it covers the subject of problems of integration and participation. Following the report, the Dutch government responded with a letter, which details measures to weaken the influence of the regime and to stop the involuntary payment of 2% diaspora tax.

On 24 November 2016, Eritrean lawyer Daniel Mekonnen gave a speech at a panel discussion on Eritrea, organized by Amnesty International, in Basel, Switzerland. The speech was aimed at two recent pronouncements by the Swiss government that suggest that positive political change is taking place in Eritrea. According to Mekonnen, this completely ignores the reality in the country.
